1. Introduction
This policy outlines the approach of the London School of Business & Education Ltd (LSBE) to the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), enabling students to receive credit for knowledge, skills, and experience gained through previous uncertificated learning. LSBE is committed to supporting students in their learning and development goals while adhering to regulatory and awarding body requirements.
2. What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
RPL is defined as a method of assessment that evaluates whether a student meets the learning outcomes of a qualification unit through prior knowledge, skills, and understanding, without the need for further learning.
3. Exemption and Credit Transfer
3.1 Exemption
Exemption applies when students use certificated achievements from outside the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) to claim exemption from certain qualification requirements.
3.2 Credit Transfer
Credit transfer allows students to apply previously achieved QCF qualification credits towards new qualifications, reducing the need to repeat previously learned material.
3.3 RPL vs. Exemption and Credit Transfer
-
RPL: For uncertificated learning and skills, leading to the award of credits.
-
Exemption: Based on certificated learning outside QCF.
-
Credit Transfer: For transferring credits within the QCF framework.
4. LSBE’s Role in the RPL Process
LSBE ensures the RPL process is accessible, efficient, and fair.
Our Commitments:
-
Students are registered upon starting the RPL evidence-gathering process.
-
Assessment records are maintained to ensure transparency and compliance.
-
Certified claims are processed according to normal procedures.
-
Designated staff provide support and assure the RPL process's quality.
-
Students are informed about RPL during course booking, induction, and throughout the program.
-
Clear assessment plans are created to guide students in meeting learning outcomes.
Exceptions:
RPL may not apply if:
-
Regulatory requirements (e.g., health and safety, licensing) restrict its use.
-
Specific units demand assessment in certain settings or under specific conditions.
5. Student’s Role in the RPL Process
Students are central to the RPL process and must:
-
Notify LSBE early of their intent to pursue RPL.
-
Provide evidence demonstrating they meet the unit's learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
-
Understand that full credit is awarded only when all outcomes of a unit are met.
-
Work with instructors to gather, organize, and present evidence for assessment.
6. Assessment of Achievement via RPL
Once evidence is submitted, the assessor will:
-
Provide feedback and discuss the results with the student.
-
Recommend credit awards if the evidence is sufficient.
-
Guide students requiring additional evidence or further development.
If the student disagrees with the assessment decision, they can appeal through LSBE’s Appeals Policy.
7. Claiming Exemption and Credit Transfer
LSBE supports students in using Exemption and Credit Transfer processes to gain credits for previous learning.
LSBE Commitments:
-
Register and validate students' prior qualifications with relevant awarding bodies.
-
Ensure all records are maintained and accessible for external verification.
-
Apply rigorous quality assurance and verification processes to credit claims.
-
Inform students of the benefits of these processes, including time and cost savings.
Student’s Role:
-
Provide original, authentic certification evidence for exemptions or credit transfers.
